Immigration: Is it good or bad for America?

This week we have been talking about immigrants. Who are they? Where do they come from? Why do they come here?

Politically, the Mexican-U.S. border has become a hot spot for immigration policy. Why not Canada? Is there some difference between the two countries that drives us to put more border patrol on the southern border?

The image above shows thousands of Mexican and Latin American people marching in the streets of Los Angeles to show support for accepting immigrants. Richard Rodriguez said this about the marches: The marches prove that immigrants are not alone. They have families -- and they're woven into our nation too deeply to tear out. Notice that he appeals to family values and then uses the metaphor of a quilt -- "woven into our nation." So what happens if we start pulling the threads out of our national quilt? Do you agree with this metaphor? Explain.

Comments:
As an american, I understand why people from other countries would want to come here. We have many things that they do not, such as freedom. I don't agree that they should be coming here illagly, it's not fair to the people that had to go through all that bullshit to become legal to come over to our country. But I do think it's kinda late to be doing something about it now. If our country didn't want it to happen, they should have done something about it when it first started. trying to send them all home is just going to piss alot of people off, and we don't need anymore countries against us.

Immigration is simply people seeking better lives so they come to America. All though many are against it, I completely understand the reasoning behind it. Growing up around serveral hispanics, friends of the family, I hear about the life style in for instance Mexico. They are so poor and can't afford to take care of their families. In the U.S. they can so it only makes since. We judge, but who's to say we wouldn't do the same for our family. Many mexicans have families here and in Mexico both. They contribute to our country so who are we to say they should leave. Are we really that coldhearted? As long as they agree to take care of the legal matters I think they should be allowed.Heather Engel

I do believe that if we remove all of the immigrants in America we would hurt our nations economy drastically. However I think that if there are illegal immigrants here they should be removed. I do not have any problems with people who want to come to America as long as they go through the proper channels. Tamara

I hear situation every day that involve immagrants. they want to have our equal rights but they don't want to get charge with taxes, that us americans have to pay. so therfore i think they shouldnt get our legal rights until they all come to an agreement to abie by all of the rules we Americans have

Who is the immigrant?????. Mexican's live in poor country try'n to servie takeing care of there famlie's.Canadins is not a poor country.it's a very strict country & mean people. I dont like kunucks. USA is the land of opertonite is'nt it!!??!!.

Immigrants........The word means nothing to me. Its just another word to keep people out who America thinks doesn't belong. GOd made all to be together in unity and help each other to understand the difference in one another. The metaphor is ture. Immigrants are 50% of our population. They have families who have families that work and struggle just like Americans and I don't see a difference.

I believe that the Mexicans should be able to come & live here in America if they please. But I do think that they should become legal citizens & pay taxes... But I also say that they should get paid the same amount that Americans do on the job. The Mexicans tend to take jobs that most Americans won't take & take a lesser pay. & I don't think that we should have pushed them all out like we did. It's like they treat every Mexican like they're nothing & that's not right.
