Religions of the World: Global Understanding

Look at the pie graph to the right. This is a graph of the main religions in the world and how many people adhere to them. While Christians represent one-third of the world or 2.1 billion people, most of the world (4 billion people) is not Christian. What other religions are represented strongly in the world other than Christianity? And what does it mean to Americans that most of the world is not Christian? How should this knowledge of religious diversity shape our understanding of the world?

Finally, notice the 16% of the world that is nonreligious, half of whom are believers in a God. This 8% of the world may view themselves as spiritual but not religious. Why? Is this a trend?

Comments:
To me religion is something that you have faith in and you choose to hoor it in your personal life. I think that many times religion is chosen by what someone is brought up in and they may choose to elaborate or critique it later in life. I am a religious person and I often wonder what the world would be like if no one believed in God. I, also, think that it is important to have diversity in the world so that others may open our eyes to other important beliefs. I had no idea that Hinduism and Islam were such a large percent of the world's religion. I guess that makes sense because these are huge countries that religion is not a choice in, like it is in America. ~Meagan Fillman

Im not very big on the religion aspect yes i believe in God and that there is a afterlife heaven and hell al of that stuff but i belive that religion is a personal connection that you have with God and you should nto ahve to go somewhere like a church to prove it. and with teh other largest religion in the world being islam . that is kind of mind blowing, the media makes you think that all islams are violent bad people which i do not believe.

As a nonreligious person, I am not surprised at the percentage of nonreligious people. Religion is something that can be very confusing and sometimes hard to understand, however, I am surprised at the number of Islam. I never realized how many Islamic people we had in our world, and with all this contorversy in our world today, it kinda scares me!

Religion is definantly a topic that brings out many discussions. As shown in the diagram there are many other religions it just seems as if we mostly here about Christianity as it has the highest precentage of one chosen religion. Most of the world is different though which is why everyone has their own opinion. I,myself, am a Christian, but I realize the world is so diverse and all won't jump on the band wagaon that's why we are so unique. I focus on my beliefs and leave others to focus on theres. I think that as Americans we sometimes forget that other cultures have religions and beliefs that are important too. I feel that people should not be ridiculed for their beliefs. This graph shows the diversity of the world and we should try to understand that people are different in all aspects. As a Christian I tend to judge people by first impressions, however that is not always a good thing. Sometimes people need to step back and understand where the other person is coming from then I think we might get a better understanding of each other and the world. tmccoy

The information on this blog tells us that the majority of the people in the world are Christian. As a Christian, I find this to be comforting. However, Islam is a close second. Personally, I would be interested in knowing what the trends in religion were 5 or maybe 10 years ago. Is Islam going to surpass Christianity as the main religion in the world- and if so, why are so many people turning to this religion? We all need to understand that there are cultural difference among people in different parts of the world, but Islam seems to be such a radical religious choice. Maybe that's because only the bad aspects of a religion are relayed in the news. Christians, I am sorry to say may be developing a bad name for themselves, with all the publicity surrounding the Fundamentalist Baptist Church. This church, for reasons God only knows, thinks that their calling is to protest during funerals.I believe in free speech, but there is a time and a place for everything, Is this behavior suppose to relay to the rest of the world the fact that our God loves them?
As far as being spiritual, but not religious, I had a friend once tell me that he felt so much closer to God out among all the beautiful things that God had made for us. This for him, was a much more real religious experience, more real than sitting in a church. SMeeks

I think that many people claim that they belong to a certain religious group based the way they have been raised and by their parents beliefs, not necessarily by their own experience. I do think that it is becoming a trend to be 'spiritual' not religious because a person doesn't have to follow the rules or traditions of a particular religion.

Religion is part of everyones upbringing. Each person is rasied with some kind of faith.Or belief. D-Ketah words.religion is like going to the store their are iles of religions take you pick.

I dont think religion is trend. Its something that you have to believe in yourself. It comes from the diffrent backgrounds you were raised in. Some people just dont take it seriously.

I don't think that religion is a trend. People chose to be the way they are. Maybe it's because of their up bringing or maybe it's some other reason. Whatever the case people chose to be the way they are. Personally, I am a Christian, & I'm not going to judge anybody on their lifestyle & what they believe in. That's not my place to judge others. So the fact that most of the world isn't Christian doesn't affect me. All I can do is pray for people. Whether they believe in a higher power or not.

Some people view religion as worshipping God, so maybe that 8% believe there is a god, which is in essence spiritual, but do not devote themselves to him. This could be a trrend because while people do not wish to base their whole lives on worshipping this God, they can at least believe He exists.
